Charmy's - February 2010
NEW ADDRESS FROM MAY 25, 2010 -- 2 Alborz Street, Hafez Avenue, opposite Amirkabir University.
Tel. 66498510
There are very few places where you feel completely at home when you walk in. But this was how we felt when we went to Charmy's, a fresh vegetarian pasta place in the centre of Tehran close to the Vahdat (Roudaki) Hall; it is a very nice yet small and warm, as well as extremely clean, eating spot. The place has been open for almost 2 years, and 23rd February is the anniversary of their opening.

Leon - January 10
Karimkhane Zand Avenue, South Aban, Varsho Crossroad
Tel. 88904625, 88930363, 88930364
I asked where they were going and she said Leon! I had been hearing about this restaurant in Aban street for some time from other people too. Even though I could not join them for lunch that day, I decided to make it a must as soon as I could and in a less than a week we went there twice with family and friends. And here is my report on this small place with very friendly staff and good setting and chic ambiance and easy parking, well only in the evenings, which is a family business and has been passed on from grandfather to grandson Bernard who runs it with others.

Mouffetard - November 09
123 North Kheradmand Street, Karimkhan-e-Zand
Tel. 88304100 + 88810023
The Mouffetard Restaurant was a place that we used to frequent a lot when were much younger. It had decent food, decent service and even sometimes music. I had not been there for years even though I had often passed it by during the day.

Limon - October 09
Samaan Street, South Shiraz Street, off Mollasadra Ave
Tel. 88038093+88065750
Once in a while, even in Tehran, one walks into a real surprise. This is what I felt when our friend Ali had invited us to a new restaurant in town. As always he wanted to impress his guests with his wit and taste and despite my reservations I must admit that he won me over.

Swiss Restaurant (Fardis) - October 09
No. 28 Arayeh Alley, Mousavi (Forsat) Street, above Ferdowsi Square.
Tel. 88811143, reservations 88828516
I am certain that those of us who used to go out in Tehran many many years ago will have been familiar with the famous Swiss Restaurant in Forsat Street. Next to the Fardis Hotel, it has been around for nearly fifty years and it was one of the best places in Tehran to dine, and in the summer we used to enjoy the lovely garden and the small tables in the verandas, and during the rest of the year we went to the warm and cozy interior, which was and still is in the Viennese decoration style. We had not gone there, for some years as the quality of service and food had taken a serious nosedive from the level of excellence that we were used to and thus expected.

Touch - May 09
12 Koh-e Noor Shopping Center, Farmanieh avenue, Tehran
Tel. 22832258,22832468
One of the best eating places in Tehran is without a doubt Touch at the junction of Lavasani and Farmanieh. On several occasions we have taken our guests there and we have not been disappointed. The three friends who started this, Human Karimi, Makan Meshkati and Hamed Ehtesham have succeeded in keeping up their high standards. Mr Ehtesham who also manages the restaurant is most attentive and hard working and keeps a close eye on what goes on.

Jigar - May 09
Sheikh Bahaie Square, Seoul Street, corner of 2nd street No. 68
Tel. 88069828 or 88069882
The second time we went to the cinema, I fancied jigar, (barbequed liver) and it is considered a very nourishing food. In Iran this is sold in little places called jigari's. Ali knew of a new good place near his office and we ended up at Jigar-sara-e Ojagh-bashi. They also do a lot of different kebabs and deliver, but jigar is something that you must have straight from the barbeque. I am very fond of it, and this may be because it always reminds me of the times I used to go out with my grandmother and she would treat us to jigar if we had behaved ourselves.

Pasto - February 09
Aftab Tower, Aftab Street, Vanak Avenue, Tehran
Tel. 88032720 or 88049679
Once in a while we come across a place to eat that is simply fun. It may not be great but has good vibes about it and such a place is Pasto, an Italian restaurant with one of the best auras I have found in Tehran. Ali is a good friend who introduced us not that long ago to this lovely, nice, small restaurant and we have been there a few times recently and every time had a lot of fun.

Entracte - August 08 - THIS RESTAURANT IS NO LONGER OPEN
I have loved cinema since I was a child and when in summer days I was taken to one of the few open-air cinemas in Tehran, where they used to show films on the roof of the cinema, then it was a double delight. I lived in Montreal for a few months and besides the cinema De Parc and my long walks in that beautiful green city I loved brunching there. When I was a student in the UK and I lived with a few other girls in an apartment near the university, we used to throw brunch parties and invited friends and professors alike to join us on Sundays.

Garcias (Mexican) - June 08 THIS RESTAURANT HAS RE-OPENED IN THE CENTRE OF TEHRAN
The town of Lavasan is on the east side of Tehran. It used to be a small village for those weekenders wanting to get away from the city. Now it is almost a suburb and, with the Bababie expressway, getting there is very easy even though you must drive through a series of hairpin bends through the mountains. Our friend Tina, who is the queen of cakes and desserts in Tehran, moved there recently and it was she who told us about a little Mexican gem on Lavasan Boulevard. So last weekend we arranged to go and see her at her most wonderful villa and then go to the Garcia Mexican restaurant for lunch.
Touch - June 08
12 Koh-e Noor Shopping Center, Farmanieh Avenue, Tehran
Tel. 22832258, 22832468
Tehran is a very big and extremely busy city, by any definition cosmopolitan and with great potential, and in such a place what is most missing for those who are the more well-traveled is a variety of good restaurants. We were delighted to learn that a new restaurant was opening and we went there on its opening night last week.

Just south of Ekhtiyarieh square on the corner of Behestan 10th Street there is a nice and quiet place to eat and you would appreciate it even more if you are vegetarian. The restaurant is called Ananda and it has been there for a few years and although I have mentioned Ananda in my articles in the past I have not written specifically about it.

Gilane Zeyton - January 08
Mediterranean Passaszh (Mall), Saba Boulevard, Africa (Jordan) Avenue, Tehran
Tel. 22041434 & 22040324
We had seen the huge advertising board in the middle of Jordan Avenue, above the Arash crossing, not far from where we live, but had not been there until recently when we did go twice in a short time. The name of the restaurant is Gilane which means little Gilan. Gilan is the name of a province in the north of Iran, well known for its wonderful culinary delicacies among other things. It is also called Zeyton (olive) for the selection of Lebanese food on the menu; therefore it could be called Gilane/Zeyton.

It is opposite the late Dr Hessabi’s house in the north of Elahieh below the Tajrish end of Maghsoudbek StreetIt was such a delight to go to this lovely garden and sit in the lovely cafe and enjoy the peace, tranquility and beauty which is very rare in the crazy busy Tehran that I love.

Khoshbin - July 07
406 North Saadi Ave., below Sayeed Ali Crossing/Manoucheri Street,
Tel. 33902194
Once in a while one comes across an experience that although not great certainly is interesting. I have been trying to find out regional restaurants in Tehran which is not an easy task. Recently I struck lucky and one of our taxi drivers knew of an authentic Rashti restaurant ( Rasht is the capital city of Gilan province in northern Iran by the Caspian Sea ) and kindly found their phone number for me.

Lounge - June 07
The Lounge, 17 Erfani Alley, Mojdeh Street, Niavaran Avenue, Tehran.
Tel. 22715953
We were recently talking to some friends about good restaurants in Tehran. They introduced us to a new place called The Lounge. Last week, our two godsons, Pouya and Nima had birthdays very close to each other and although we had a small party for them, they invited us to experience this restaurant. This is a cozy little place near Niavaran, even though it is not on the main street and is not easy to find, once you get there it is worth the effort. First of all you are delighted with some lovely flower tubs just outside and a doorman who also helps with the parking with a broad smile and good manners. The restaurant is long and narrow. It is well decorated and practical, despite its narrowness.

No. 29 South Sheikh Bahaie, Mollasadra Ave., Tehran
Tel. 88035444
The Taj Mahal is a hotel in the north center of Tehran on the west side of Vanak Square . One of its main features is a well known restaurant which has been around since it opened a few years ago. We had heard about it, but for various reasons only went there for the first time when a friend invited us over a few months ago. We went there again recently and here is our report on Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant.
REVISITED FEBRUARY 2010 - Still very busy and still the food is good.

Cingari - May 07
4, Zohreh Street, Mofateh Avenue.
Tel. 88327075
Cingari is Tehran 's new Indian restaurant which is the corner of Mofateh (formerly Roosevelt Avenue) andZohreh Street , in central Tehran , close to 7th Tir square. A few friends had recommended it and we had been meaning to go there for some time but finally got a chance a few weeks ago to go for a goodbye dinner for one of our friends and also because we had a vegetarian guest from England. Tehran is not noted for its choice of vegetarian restaurants, but the Cingari does a very good range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian food in Mughlai style. We went there again a week later with some other friends.

Bix is a Californian/Italian pizzeria located on the first floor of the Ghandi Shopping center in the middle of Ghandi Avenue . It is under the same ownership as Monsoon which is a Thai restaurant. Tehran like all other metropolises has many hidden beautiful corners and places. I had heard from my good friends about a lovely cafe near 7th Tir Square. They had assured me that it offers great coffee and the ambiance is top notch.

Vegetarian Restaurant at Artists Forum - September 06
Artist’s Forum (Khaneh Honarmandan),Iranshahr Avenue
Many friends who visit Iran and are vegetarian have complained that they have a hard time finding good food that suits them. Many Iranian dishes are vegetarian but it is not usual to find them in restaurants. As the saying goes, the best Iranian traditional food is always served at home. However, I am writing this short piece to introduce one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Tehran . This was in a cellar of a small house in the north center of Tehran , which now I understand is the home of Iran’s Vegetarian Society. I was delighted to have learned some time ago that the group, headed by Ali Agha, has started their operation at Artist’s Forum (Khaneh Honarmandan) cultural center in Iranshahr Avenue , in the center of Tehran .

Darband Koohpayeh Restaurant - November 06
Autumn arrived abruptly in Tehran a few weeks ago. First we had a good deal of rain and thunderstorms, but mostly we get a wind, sometimes cold and rough but generally pleasant. The best thing about it either way is that the wind blows away the smog covering Tehran and we get a clear blue sky which means that we can clearly see the mountains surrounding this crazy and dear city of ours.
Darakeh SPU - September 06
Darakeh Square, Tehran
Tel: 22419494
Darakeh is a village on the slopes of the mountains to the north of Tehran and is one of the many spots that people can go for a soft or hard hike depending on how far they wish to walk. When I was younger, and before it become so popular amongst the young as a place to meet friends, I used to get up very early in the morning, on Thursday mornings usually, go there, hike about an hour or so, have breakfast and be back home for a shower and a change and get to work by 9am. But these days due to my uncooperative knees I can hardly undertake any such adventures without painful consequences for weeks afterwards.

Bistango - March 06
Ramtin Hotel, Valiasr Street, South of Park Saai
Tel. 88554409
Bistango offers international cuisine at highest standards. Bistango came about when Saman Jilanchi came back to Iran after 18 years to run the family business, the Raamtin Hotel in Vali-Asr Street. He wanted to bring fine dining experience back to Tehran and so he hired a Canadian chef who taught his students, who later took over. The dream came true. Most of those who go to Bistango agree that its distinctiveness and service is still unrivaled in Tehran. We can only hope that others learn from this so that more customers enjoy better food and service. It is not cheap but it certainly is worth it.

Monsoon - March 06
Gandi Ave., Corner of 4th St., Gandi Shopping Center, 2nd floor # 20
Tel. 88791982-88791983
The next place we went to is an older restaurant and since it opened several years ago it remains one of my favorite places in Tehran. I love its easygoing atmosphere and I like Asian food. I like the fact that these days one can try Sushi and Hosomaki and Futomaki rolls. It is the closest thing you can get the best Japanese food here in Tehran.

Entrecote - February 06
No. 1 South Shiraz Street, Khordestan Expressway
Tel. 88058310
The first place we were invited to was Entrecote, which I was told by the manager Mr. Salehzadeh is a branch of the famous Paris restaurant. This was the first time we had been there. I am sure those who have been to their other restaurants around the world would like to try it out and see for themselves how this one matches up to the standards they know.

Delhi Darbar - December 05 - THIS RESTAURANT HAS NOW CLOSED
The first time I met Mr. Bahrami was nearly 25 years ago. Then I used to live in Iranshahr Avenue and often we used to walk to the Indian restaurant near the former US embassy. I had just returned from UK and we loved Indian food, and the food and especially their nan (bread) was great.

Reza Logmeh - February 05
Joumhouri Avenue, No. 25 Mirza-Kouchank-Khan Street
Tel. 66702925
A couple of readers have written to me and asked me to write about more 'traditional' eating places as well. I am not sure if this really falls in that category, but I am pleased to inform them and other good readers who are interested in finding new places to stop by and eat, that I have discovered a very nice eating place. It is called Reza Loghmeh (loghmeh actually means morsel or mouthful). And it has two branches in the center of Tehran.

Gole Rezaieh - February 05
80, 30th Tirr Avenue, Tehran, Iran
Tel. 66707290
Like all other metropolitan cities, Tehran has many hidden gems. I would like to introduce you to one such place. In the middle of the city center, in 30th Tirr Avenue (formerly known as Ghavam-O-Saltaneh), near the lovely Abgineh Museum, there is a lovely old restaurant called Gole Rezaieh. As one friend said, this small restaurant looks a little tatty, but the moment you walk into Gole Rezaieh, it is like you have entered another space and time!
